In a case that has major national implications for maintaining and enforcing the boundaries between chiropractic and physical therapy, the US Supreme Court has declined to hear the appeal by the physical therapists in the case of Michael Teston vs. Arkansas Board of Chiropractic Examiners. In this case, a physical therapist in Arkansas was found to be performing "spinal manipulations," for which only chiropractors are licensed. After rigorous review by the Arkansas Board of Chiropractic Examiners, the defendant was found to be in violation of the Chiropractic Practice Act. The Arkansas Chiropractic Board levied a "civil penalty" of $10,000 following the determination that the chiropractic code had been violated.

Chiropractic Adjustment or Spinal Manipulation?

By Dr. James Gregg

It is my opinion that chiropractors for too long have not spoken out on our philosophical approach to health and disease. Beleaguered as chiropractic has been by orthodox medicine, we have strived to prove our value by defending the practice of our science and proving it’s clinical validity for the treatment of musculo-skeletal disorders. Essentially we have won the battle of acceptance, but have we fought so long that we have forgotten what the battle was for?
